The course deals with the study
of Eugenics, Genetic engineering, Genetic diseases, Cloning, DNA
finger printing, gene therapy, Forensic analysis, Recombination
technology. Using instruments like ultra centrifuge, electrophoretic
unit, sterilizer, pH meter, laminar airflow.
B.Sc., Genetics is a regular three
years degree course of Bangalore University, which has higher
prospects in the field of research and development. Conserving
and utilizing the plants, gene banks management, in vitro conservation,
in Situ Conservation - including genetic resource and farm conservation.
This course has higher job prospects
in pharmaceutical industry in the making of DNA vaccines, genetically
engineered insulin production. In medical laboratories for the
detection of cellular oncongenes, tumor suppressor genes &
viral oncogenes.
We live in an exciting world of
genetic information. There are immense opportunities for constructive
experiments which could improve the yield of major food crops.
One of the limitations of crop productivity in our country is
the shortage of N-fertilizers. This can be overcome by harnessing
biological nitrogen fixation through genetic experimentation.
Significant increase in yield potential can be obtained by mutation.
Triticale, a new food grain, is
an example of a significant achievement made possible through
cytogenetic techniques. This example demonstrates what the students
of genetics can do for our country.
Research laboratories and forensic
laboratories give much more importance to students who graduate
from this course. After completing the course one can go for higher
studies in Masters' degree in India or abroad.
